7TH COMMANDMENT

Exodus 20:14

Inspired by the sermons of an anonymous pastor who served in ministry at Windsor Forest in the 1960’s.

God established the institution of marriage, as marriage is a picture of God’s covenant relationship with His people: it is an earthly image of God’s divine plan. It is as old as the human race. It is a holy and beautiful relationship as man and woman join hands and hearts and lives to live with each other. Marriage is an exclusive relationship. One man for one woman. It’s a permanent relationship. The two become one flesh. It is not meant to be dissolved – not entered on a trial basis with the idea that if we don’t like it, we can get out of it.

These things are difficult to write, because our society has abused this institution. When you turn on the television, you are met with folks committing adultery without any shame. Many of us think that we own our bodies, and whatever we do in our bodies is our own business. God warns against adultery, not only in the Old Testament, but also in the New Testament. When we commit adultery, we mar our testimony. Both Galatians 5:19-21 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 strongly warn against sexual immorality with grave consequences.

If you are in the midst of an adulterous relationship, remember that God is a forgiving God, but this requires repentance. 1 John 1:9 says that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
