Learn to listen to God…
And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. So, he arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you did call me. “When Eli perceived that the Lord had called the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.’” So, Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 Now the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”
And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.”
1 Samuel 3:8-10
Black states that a huge part of storm-proofing our lives is hearing God’s voice. We all know that God speaks through a number of ways, but we must learn to hear the voice of God for ourselves.
In this passage of scripture, Samuel is living with Eli, the priest. God calls Samuel, but he thinks that it is Eli who is calling him. Eli, his mentor, tells him it was God who was calling him. He also tells him that he should respond the next time God speaks.
Let us pray that God gives us the patience to wait for his voice. Sometimes we are so busy with our requests that we forget to quiet our spirits to listen to God. God may speak to us to tell us about an upcoming storm, give us instructions on how to weather a storm, or encourage us during a storm.
Don’t beat yourself up if you are learning the voice of God. We all struggle in the area of discerning his voice. Also remember that God speaks a number of ways. Ask him to show you how he primarily speaks to you. Remember, quiet yourself so that you can hear him when he does speak.
PRAYER: Speak, Lord. Your servant hears you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
