Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust is the cornerstone of our faith. Without it, there is no relationship between us and God. We are to rely on him with all our heart. Just going through this study in the book of Proverbs is an exercise of trust. We believe that these principles are true and that God will bless as we pursue him in all that we do.
The second principle is to not lean to our own understanding. It can be difficult to override our feelings, intellect and intuition and default to what God says about a situation. You want to react in anger; God says don’t let the sun go down on your wrath. You want to leave a spouse, and God tells you to stay. You want to cheat on your income taxes, but God tells you to walk in truth. You want to “defriend” someone from your life because of past hurt; however, God tells you to forgive. Oh, “lean not on your own understanding” can be hard, but it is possible.
Finally, this common proverb says that if we submit to God, he will make our paths straight. When I see this, I think of a life of simplicity and convenience. We avoid some twists and turns when we give it all to Him.
PRAYER: Lord, I admit that I sometimes walk in doubt. At times, I want to use my own fleshly devices to get my needs met. This is not what you desire of me. You want me to trust in you and not rely on myself. Teach me how you want me to submit to you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
