34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”

37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.”

And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

Acts 8: 34-37

Verse 35 says that Philip opened his mouth and beginning with this Scripture, he told the eunuch the good news about Jesus. Can you hear Philip talking about this Jesus, his death, his burial, and his resurrection? Can you hear Philip telling the eunuch about a God who loved him and gave his life for him? Can you hear Philip telling him that he died just for him? No conditions or requirements. Just believe. Can you hear Philip telling him that we are all sinners saved by grace and that we are all the same? God is no respecter of persons. Can you hear Philip telling him that this law that kept him out of the assembly was powerless to save him? Can you hear Philip telling him that Jesus was made like us in every way so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, atoning for our sin?

After hearing this good news, this message confirmed everything the eunuch thought he knew in his heart. After clearly hearing and understanding Philip, he asks Philip in verse 36, what hinders him from being baptized. Isn’t it strange that he would ask that question. These words would come from a man who was used to people telling him no. Accustomed to spiritual doors being shut in his face, nothing hindered him because Jesus had paid the price. All he had to say was, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

PRAYER: Lord, I see the power of the gospel in the life of this eunuch, and I see the gospel’s power in my own life. Let me never take your good news for granted. I always want to live in gratitude for what you are doing. In the name of Jesus, I praise you. Amen.
