God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 1:9

In Dallas Willards’s “The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives,” he says the following:

“For at least several decades the churches of the Western world have not made discipleship a condition of being a Christian. One is not required to be or to intend to be, a disciple in order to become a Christian, and one may remain a Christian without any signs of progress toward or in discipleship…

Little good results from insisting that Christ is also supposed to be Lord; to present his lordship as an option that leaves it squarely in the category of the white-wall tires and stereo equipment for the new car. You can do without it…”

God has called us into fellowship with Christ. This is no ordinary feat. It means that we must live a life of discipline and learn how to follow Christ. This is not a “do it yourself” operation, but it is a walk that requires help from others. We need to be taught, held accountable, and disciplined. It requires a decision to be vulnerable and exposed, totally counter to what most Christians do.

Today, take a good look at your life. Have you been vulnerable with other Christians? Do you allow others to speak into your life? Are you willing to be corrected? If you answer “no” to any of those questions, it is time to get connected with someone who can help you follow Christ.

PRAYER: Lord, search me and connect me, in the way you intended.
