“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”
Matthew 5:13
God really wanted us to get this “church thing.” He wants it so much that his word is full of metaphors for the church. What is a metaphor? It is a comparison in which one thing is said to be another. God uses common, everyday words to get his point across.
The church is the salt of the earth. In Matthew 5, Jesus says that we are the salt of the earth. We all know the attributes of salt. It is used as a preservative and to enhance flavor. What does this mean for us? It means that the church’s presence is a preservative. Can you imagine what would happen if the church disappeared from the scene? How would that change the world? Just the prayers of the saints invite the Lord’s presence into dark situations. Some institutions and things are standing only because of the presence and/or prayers of the saints.
PRAYER: Lord, thank you for using the church to be salt in the earth. You have sprinkled us in the world to preserve and show forth your presence. In the name of Jesus, I pray and give you praise. Amen
