“The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:14)

The final misconception we will cover this week is that experiencing God’s miracles is all about our work.

When I was a little girl working in the field pulling weeds, I would call my dad to help me pull a weed I could not pull. My dad would come close to me, put his hands over my hands and pull the weed. He would tell me, “Girl, you are stronger than a baby bull.” I would smile thinking to myself how much I impressed my dad. Now, looking back, I realized that it was all him—I just cooperated with him. I did not have the natural strength to complete the job, but my daddy did.

In this story of the Red Sea crossing, God’s people were not in the same league with the Egyptians. The Egyptians had an army, chariots, and horsemen and were trained to fight and destroy. They did not have the natural strength to destroy the Egyptians, but their Daddy did. God tells Moses in verse 14, the Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace. It was the Angel of God who came and went before the camp providing division between them and the Egyptians. It was the Lord who caused the sea to pull back. It was the Lord who troubled the army of the Egyptians. It is the Lord who took off the Egyptian chariot wheels. It was the Lord who returned the sea to its full depth. Verses 30 and 31 say that the Lord saved Israel that day. Thus, Isarel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt.

Somehow, we have fooled ourselves into thinking that miracles are about our work. The right prayers. The right fast. The right declarations. The right connections. We think that if we only do the work on our end, our God will show up. Absolutely, we should pray, fast, declare, and connect, but it is our God who performs the miracle.

PRAYER: Lord, build my faith so that I can work in tandem with you, understanding that ultimately, the miracle is up to you. You will fight for me, and all I must do is stand still and hold my peace. Thank you for the rest I have in you.
