Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.

Romans 12:17

God's kingdom is the exact opposite of the world's kingdom. We are taught, as Christians to forgive, not avenge, and pray for our enemies. We all know this because it is noted repeatedly in scripture. If you struggle with the desire to avenge the wrongs done to you, there are a few things to remember.

First, this is a very common drive—to do wrong to those who have done us wrong OR want evil for those who have done us wrong. It is natural to want to punish another for the pain inflicted on us. BUT Christ requires more of us. Yes, this is difficult, but we are to emulate his example. He outright commands it (see Matthew 5:39-40, 1 Peter 3:9).

The next thing we should remember is that Christ asks us to do no less than what he did. Remember Jesus on the cross. He suffered, bled, and died without fault. Yet, he asked his Father to forgive them.

The final point is that our withholding evil for evil is an opportunity to allow Christ to shine forth in us. It is unnatural, and anyone who witnesses love for hate gets to see the Spirit of God at work in the life of the believer.

PRAYER: Lord, there are times when I silently wish that you would harm my enemies as they have harmed me. Thank you for reminding me that I am not to give evil for evil, but rather do what is right before all men. Give me the grace, Lord, to walk this out. I cannot do it without you. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
