But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:17

Many of us have dreamed of getting married since being small. We hear stories of Cinderella and Snow White and convince ourselves that our prince will come. For those of us who have grown up in the church or have kissed our fair share of frogs, we look at the story of Ruth and Boaz and pray that one day God will bless us with a companion. There is nothing wrong with this longing, as it is God-given and God-ordained. God has placed in us a need to be with another. We long to be one with another, and this union becomes the foundation of our family.

Unfortunately, there are times when we get things off-balanced. We believe that we are only complete if we have a companion, and we go through life feeling incomplete – waiting for someone to make us whole. At times, this “need” for companionship can impact our self-worth. If we have a companion then all is well with the world. Our self-worth can become contingent on having a ring on our left hand. This ought not be this way.

We must remember that our ultimate marriage is with the Lord Jesus Christ. Despite our marital status, He comes first. He is our first partner. He is our first love. He is the one whom we ultimately aim to please. Any relationship with a man or woman should only augment the one we have with Christ.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, you are my ultimate companion. I want to get even closer to you. Give me a longing for you. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
