“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the Lord delivers him out of them all.”

Psalm 34:18-19

Has your heart ever been broken? Chances are it has.

Remember when you were about 14 years old and the classmate you thought was your “main squeeze” asked someone else to the junior prom? Or maybe you had your heart set on a special item for Christmas and Santa Claus skipped your chimney? Spouses can betray us. Best friends sometimes deceive us. Church folks can disappoint us. Simply, people often let us down.

Circumstances also have a way of tearing at our cores. The loss of a loved one can be devastating. Likewise, unexpected severance from a job, the end of a relationship, or a divorce or custody battle can be both shocking and overwhelming. Any of these situations can stress us out, bearing down on our emotional and physical health.

What a blessing to know that God’s eyes are on us, and His ears are open to our cries. He’s not far. Yes, our Lord is nearby. The Living Bible says God is close to those whose hearts are breaking. He rescues those who are humbly sorry for their sins. While none of us escapes all trouble, we can count on God to help us when trouble comes. What an assurance!

PRAYER: Lord, I thank you for hearing me and for delivering me out of my troubles. When my heart is broken, remind me that your eyes are on me and that your ears are open to my cries. You are my rescuer, my fortress, my hiding place. I am depending on you. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
