3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

As you read these excerpts, you must remember that these theologians did not write these truths to tickle your ears. As Richard Foster wrote in his introduction, these theologians promised no prosperity, easy roads to holiness, or quick steps to peace of mind.

These saints of old were committed to the truth. This is something our culture has not fully embraced. Instead, many Christians do not want to hear sound doctrine. They look for a “different gospel” to fulfill their personal desires and look to our teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

PRAYER: Lord, open my heart to the truth, Lord. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
