Philadelphia: The Faithful Church
8 “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, [f]and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. 9 Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept [g]My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. 11 [h]Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. 12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. 13 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’ Revelation 3: 8-13
Philadelphia was the gateway to the East.” It was renowned for its grapes, textiles, and leather goods.
This word “Philadelphia” means “brotherly love” or “love for the brethren.” To love one another is to manifest the love of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 13 tells us that love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. It never fails.
The Church at Philadelphia was home to a synagogue community hostile to Christians. Christ praises the church of Philadelphia for remaining faithful in the face of trials despite their limited strength. Philadelphia only received words of praise from the Lord. Two of the things it was commended for was keeping God’s word and not denying his name.
Questions: Are you demonstrating the love of Christ? Are you keeping his word? Have you ever denied his name? God knows!
PRAYER: Lord, help me to always keep your word. I want to stand up for you, never deny you. Help my life to be one that exudes brotherly love, a love that demonstrates your love. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen
