He forgives us
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
I thought that I might look at how the secular world sees forgiveness. If I were to convince you of the practical power of forgiveness, you might be able to see the spiritual benefits more clearly.
In an article from the Mayo Clinic staff, it is written that we have all been hurt by the actions or words of someone else. Unfortunately, these things can leave resentment. When we hold grudges, we can become depressed, anxious, be inconsistent with what we believe spiritually.
It is unnatural to forgive. Most of us want to respond in retaliation, hurting the person who hurt us.
Despite the difficulty we have with forgiveness, we serve a God who is willing to forgive. He says in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and WILL forgive us and PURIFY us. Now, that is one tall order. He does not place a filter on that forgiveness. He just places a requirement of confession. What God is saying is that if you agree with what I say about what you did, I can come in forgive you of the trespass and purify you.
PRAYER: Lord, search my heart and bring to my attention those ways that I have hurt you. I want to agree with what you say. Please come and cleanse me.
