Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12
My brother was an expert in electricity. During the last years of his life, I spent a lot of time with him. I recall several times during that period when the lights in one of our houses went out during a thunderstorm. Sometimes we were forewarned. Daryl could usually tell by the number of blinks and the time spans between blinks the source of the problem and how long we would have to wait for the power to be restored. Then there were times when the lights went out without warning. When the outage was unexpected, we were caught off guard, and a flashlight was usually not in arms reach. In those cases, I had to feel my way to the bathroom or to the place where I could find a working battery operated tool to help guide me until the lights came back on.
Have life circumstances, its challenges or issues ever left you feeling like you’re walking in darkness – feeling your way around in a dry place? You were scared until you found a source of light. And you didn’t feel really safe and secure until full power was restored.
Liken this scenario to life. Thunderstorms come from time to time, and often we feel like we are scrambling around in the dark, not sure when our situations will improve or when the ultimate power source will come to our rescue. We can feel “dry,” distanced from our God.
PRAYER: Father, I am having a dry spell. Sometimes I feel like you are far away and as if I’m walking in darkness. Thank you for shining your light on my situation, but more importantly on me. Help me to walk in the light where the dew drops of mercy shine bright. Please shine all around me by day and by night. Thank you for being the light of the world. In Jesus’ name, I praise you. Amen
