Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Acts 4:36-37

The scriptures say that Barnabas got his name because he was encourager. He was inclined to serve others. He was a steward, going beyond our normal level of giving to impact people and causes in need of assistance for the glory of God.

According to Nelson’s Bible Dictionary, when Barnabas became a Christian, he sold his land and gave it to the Jerusalem apostles. Acts 11:24 says, “He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.”

PRAYER: Father, thank you for reminding me of the importance of leaving a legacy. What will I be remembered for and how I will be remembered? Will I be known as a giver, an encourager? Will I be remembered as someone who went the extra mile to impact people in need and to benefit the kingdom of God? Thank you for the example Barnabas set. In the name of Jesus, I praise you. Amen.
