34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”
37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.”
And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
Acts 8: 34-37
I think it is important to know that if you want more, there is action required on your part. Remember, we want to take hold of the one who has taken hold of us. The eunuch decided to be baptized—that was only the beginning of his journey.
It is time to leave the shallow and go into the deep. What will you do to experience more of God? I am not talking about another ritual or service—I mean time with him, getting to know him personally, getting to know him intimately. You may be wondering “how.” How do I embark on this journey of more of God? Richard Foster’s book, “Celebration of Disciplines” offers some answers. Foster references Galatians 6:8 where Paul says if we sow to please our flesh, we reap destruction, but if we sow to please the Spirit, we will reap eternal life. He references the farmer’s helplessness to grow grain; all he can do is to provide the right conditions for the growing of grain. He cultivates the ground, plants the seed, and waters the plant. The natural forces of the earth take over, and up comes the grain. It is the same with spiritual disciplines like prayer, meditation, study, and fasting. They are our means of getting more of him. Ask God to give you what you need to draw closer to him. His Word says if we draw closer to Him, he will draw closer to us.
PRAYER: God, thank you for eternal life. I am so grateful that there is a life for me beyond this life’s shores, and I look forward to it. Teach me to cultivate strong spiritual roots now so that I influence others to do the same. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
