“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;”

Colossians 1:9-10

Paul makes the purpose of his prayers for the church at Colossae very clear. They are not for their healing, a promotion, or a new relationship. He prays that they would “be filled with the knowledge of His [God’s] will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” Paul goes on to pray that they walk worthy of the Lord, fully please him, be fruitful in every good work, and increase in the knowledge of God. The importance of our spiritual growth cannot be denied or ignored, and we are expected to go “all in” during the process.

God’s concern? Our spiritual growth. And as we grow spiritually, we find ourselves being conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29) – looking like him, acting like him, and responding like him. Let us not neglect to pray like this for ourselves and our loved ones, for this is the ultimate prize.

CHALLENGE: Make a commitment to pray for the things listed in this scripture, rather than focusing on things that would make our lives better materially.
