For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind

(2 Timothy 1:7)

Out of all of Paul’s letters, the book of 2 Timothy is one of the most heart-wrenching and personal. Having been threatened with many difficulties throughout his ministry, Paul knew this trial would end in his death. He writes this letter to Timothy, his beloved mentee, to encourage him and give him instructions. Things were difficult for the 1st century church. The truth was being maligned by imposters (false teachers), and Pastor Timothy was young in years. Paul addresses fear in this book, understanding Timothy needed to know how to handle it, in light of his leadership role and the challenges of ministry. He tells Timothy not to assign fear to any situation, be it his personal weaknesses or his opponents.

Some of us are strong and courageous, while others may struggle with shyness. Despite where we stand on the continuum, everyone deals with fear. In the midst of this COVID-19 pandemic, we all can think of numerous reasons to be afraid. Our world has been turned upside down. We must remember that the same God who helped Timothy – a shy, young pastor – has a solution for any fear we feel.

Prayer: Lord, we have multiple reasons to fear. Some of our fears are internal, and some of them are external. Despite the reason for fear, you have the remedy. Lord, allow 2 Timothy 1:7 to permeate our spirits so that we are assured of your promise, walking in the knowledge of your truth. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
