Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Matthew 23:12

As Christians, most of us are familiar with this passage of scripture. And, if you are anything like me, you certainly have experienced God’s chastening after having issues with pride. The fact of the matter is that humility is easily misunderstood, so we will try to shed some light on this Christian trait.

One scripture in the bible that nags at me at times was when Saul was being coronated as king. Instead of taking his God-given, rightful place, they found him hiding among the baggage (1 Samuel 10:22). Think about that. God has chosen you as king over his people and you are hiding. Unfortunately, King Saul started his reign in insecurity and ended it the same way. At the end of his life, we find him trying to kill David because of insecurity and jealousy.

Let’s make one thing clear, humility is not insecurity. Just because you look humble or defer to someone else, that does not mean that you are humble. Maybe, you are just insecure.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me with my insecurity. Let me build my confidence in my identity in you, so that I am not wavering in self-worth. Let me also realize that my humility grows from an awareness of You being the source of all good things. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
