For you have been my hope, Sovereign God. My confidence since my youth.

Psalm 71:5

Writers believe that David wrote this psalm in the latter part of his life when his family life had taken a turn for the worse. His latter years were plagued with a myriad of issues. His son raped his daughter. His other son killed the son who raped the daughter, and his other son tried to overthrow him. Can you imagine that kind of pain? Not much can rival the pain from our own family. With family, you can experience the greatest joys or the most challenging disappointments.

In spite of what King David was enduring in this season of his life, he still trusted God. Despite the difficulty, God had been his constant companion. Spurgeon says, “Where goodness has been unceasingly received, praise should unceasingly be offered.” Throughout his years, God had been his Provider, Comforter, Savior, Healer, Advocate, Counselor, Rock, Shield, Deliverer, Fortress, Strength, and Shelter. God was his Source.

PRAYER: Thank you for your unfailing love for me. Throughout the ages, you have been everything I have needed. You are my hope and my trust from my Youth. I will continually praise you. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
