He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearance of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
2 Timothy 9-10 (NIV)
Paul wrote this letter to Timothy at a very integral time in his life. Paul was imprisoned and is thinking about his death. Can you imagine the solemn mood that Paul experienced during this time, knowing that he would soon die? He loved Timothy and knew that he would assume an integral leadership role in the Christian church. Timothy needed to understand the importance of the mission and his need to stand firm in Christ, alone.
In the passage noted above, the first theme is salvation. Paul says, "He has saved us." This reminds us that salvation has already taken place. God has rescued us from danger and destruction and we do not have to suffer any penalties when he judges as Messiah. We approach God from a position he has already secured for us. It changes the way to encounter him, knowing that salvation is a result of work already done—his death on the cross.
PRAYER: Thank you, Lord, for saving us. You have rescued me from danger and destruction and I am so grateful. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
