“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Matthew 16:18

Over the past three years, the church has been challenged during this pandemic. Even though we have reopened our doors, the church is still struggling to return to what we have considered normal. The time away from church hasn’t been good for many of us or for our spiritual family relationships. We became accustomed to the isolation, and our love for “the church” has waned.

In this passage of scripture, Jesus asks the disciples who did men say He was. Based on his response, Peter demonstrates that he gets the revelation of Christ. He says, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus then declares that upon that truth, he will build his church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

When we embrace this truth, we know that nothing that came against the church will prevail. Local assemblies might close, but the church will remain. Despite how long we had to meet on Zoom or use an access code for Free Conference Call, the church remains victorious.

During the next couple of weeks, we will explore some truths about the church in hopes to fall in love with the church all over again.

PRAYER: Thank you for sustaining the church during this pandemic. Despite the odds stacked against the church, we have the assurance, through your word, that nothing will prevail against it. In the name of Jesus, I pray and give you thanks. Amen
