The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!” Lamentations 3:22-24
The author of “Great is Our Faithfulness” was born in a Kentucky log cabin in 1866, converted at 27, and became pastor at 36. One year later, he had to retire because of health issues. He spent most of his life as an insurance agent in New Jersey but wrote over 1,200 poems. In 1923, he sent some of his poems to a publishing company. One of them was “Great is Thy Faithfulness” based on Lamentations 3:22-23. The publisher was moved by the words and set it to a melody that would reflect the response of wonder and gratefulness to God’s faithfulness. The lyrics became a Moody Bible Institute favorite. George Beverly Shea began singing it at Billy Graham crusades, and as a result, it became known all over the world and has encouraged millions of believers to trust in our faithful God.
Of his situation, at age 75 Chisholm wrote: “My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.”
